At risk of sounding "old", I "admit" to have spoken about Skype Etiquette before somewhere in this blog. So recently, I was attracted to  explore this article of the same name on Techcrunch . Though I completely agree with his point (watch the video that made me laugh and see if you have not had similar experiences on Skype), I find that setting Chat Notification, wether for groups or individuals, is indeed a solution.  However, only for Chats.

Skype Chat Notify Off Limitation

While setting Notification to off does stop the chat from popping up, there is still a problem. The same Skype contact can still call you. As the video below will show, this can still disturb with both visual and noise pop ups on your screen.  In these cases (Skype contacts who call with out permission), your only recourse is to block them or place your entire contact list on Do Not Distrub (DND) Skype status. Start a chat with someone, open your ‘drawer’ so you can see the person’s name. Right click >> Chat notification settings >> “Do not notify me”

You can enable this for individual non-etiquette savvy people. Alternatively adjust your Skype sound notification settings all together.

Yeah I just go to Tools > Sounds and untick the box next to “Incoming IM”. I don’t miss IMs because I get a little jumping number next to my Skype icon in the bottom right which always catches my peripheral vision very easily. Sound is such a crude way to be notified of something. It seems Mike’s just annoyed at the sound itself (which was annoying in the video) – why not just switch it off? Use visual notifications, not audio. This isn’t the 90s.

Wow. Interesting idea. I never thought of setting chat Notification settings for a private chat between two people (myself and another person). It is like DND (do not disturb) status for only that one person.

I have set chat Notification for group chats only, but it never seemed to work for me. Oh wait. Thats right. I live on DND… I still get the event notification (3.8), now called conversation(4.x) to go through like email later. So on DND it all looks the same, accumulated events/conversations.

This is a good solution for those who do not want to be on DND status so as to not miss something important. Chat Notification works well for turning off only individual chats (group or private) that are not business critical.

Then you can always go through your unopened events or conversations or “recent” (as its called on version 3.8 and 4 ad 5 respectively) as time permits.

The point of the article is well taken however. I agree that Skype Etiquette is a skill worth learning for those to whom it does not come naturally .

Limitation: Setting Chat Notification to Not Notify you will stop the chat form popping up. However, it does not stop them from calling you.  A call will still pop up each time they try to call you.
