The new version of Skype – version 4x – is available now BUT…… We recommend you keep to the Skype v3.8. – for now at least. I have a new Skype room for this topic and also for the Skype Virus topic. There are many difficulties to overcome with v4.0. example – Skype v4x does not support any Skype Rooms that were created in v3.8.
What does this mean?
If a Skype Room was created in v3.8, you cannot join it from a link if you have v4.0. You can be added by someone who is in the room, but then you have to remember to bookmark it, as it will not automatically bookmarked like when you joined from a link.
We have had reports from people who cannot get others added at all… Their name is displayed in the room, but they cannot see the room – as though they are not there at all.
Others reported that they lost their contacts in Skype Rooms when they upgraded.
Further complications occur in Skype rooms such room guidelines not being visible and losing host all functions.
There are also no menu functions allowing the creation of new Skype Rooms.
There are some others again, who rave about it and like it better than the older version, but these are in the minority …..
We have received many conflicting reports, and we are busy investigating all of these, but in the mean time PLEASE KEEP YOUR OLD VERSION. We will report back to you as soon as we have more definite information based on facts that we have personally experienced.

If you are using Message Magic, you may also have problems with some of the features if you use Skype v4.0.
Although we are working hard to come up with the solution, it may take a while for that to be completed.That is another reason we recommend you use Skype v3.8 until further notice.
The main problems seem to occur in Skype Rooms and in add-on’s like Message Magic. We will keep you informed of any new developments.

“Julie, I got your message about the Skype 4.0 and since I downloaded it a week ago, I reinstalled 3.8 with no problems. I’m glad I was able to reinstall 3.8 without uninstalling 4.0.
My PC asked if I wanted to overwrite this program since I already had 4.0 and I clicked “Yes” to overwrite it.
I believe Skype is way better than most other Instant Messengers.”

Skype is one of the most wonderful tools on the internet. But a lot of us don’t understand, why you skipped some nice features in the new version 4.0. I list them here:
* There is no birthday alert anymore!
* It is not possible, to click on group links anymore. Isn’t that strange, that you give the possibility of groups, even made nice buttons in the past and now this is not to use anymore.
* In groups I can also not see all the members which are in. I see some few only.
I wonder if you are still working on that, or if you had some reason to skip these features.
I am not gone actually from Skype, I am deinstalling it and hope I can install a former version. I don’t want to leave Skype in any case!
I am grateful that you have developed such a nice program, but please, think if you would not want to put these missing features in again.
I am in Austria, but I know English quite well, therefore I choose English because I think, the program is made in the U.S. and I might reach the right people right away with English better.

P.S.: I am using Skype as well for personal use as for business. It is a most helpful tool, but much less without the features I mentioned! Down below I can only choose Personal OR business.
I tried the skype 4.0 on 64 bit vista system and have problem after problem. I discontinue the of skype until i can out find out if it is my computer or skype. I ran 4.0 version on a dell inspiron 9200 with 1 gig of memory and it was to slow and cause a lot of problem.
my 64bit system has 4 gig of memory but i am still having probelms.
Theresa, Skype v4.0 is not compatible with Message Magic. Grant is having the programmers work on the fix, but this will be a while yet. If you are using Message Magic, I suggest you revert back to v3.8 until MM and v4.0 are compatible.
I really like Skype 4.0 and the way it organizes my messages. I belong to several group rooms. It just lists them and I can review those message at will. My only problem is entering certain Skype rooms, like Monday Intros. I have not yet tried to broadcast with Message Magic. I will try that today and know if that is a problem. I have XP Pro as my operating system. I heard that many of the problems experienced were with VISTA. As of right now I want to keep 4.0. Will know more after I try to use MM.

How do you get the older version 3.8 back? Wish I had known about all these stupid bugs before I went thru this. The new version has major issues with voice chat in groups.

I am glad that you are happy with the new version. As I mentioned – the problems are mostly in Skype Rooms and Skype add-ons like Message Magic. Individuals don’t seem to be experiencing the same problems

I believe Skype is way better than YIM or MSN IM. Basically,YIM does not have a setup on their IM for conferences and calling landlines or cell phones. Plus YIM & MSN IM cannot use the MM software like us Skype users

I found this out the hard way and I did a system restore to revert back to 3.8…..Next time there is an upgrade tell everyone to NOT take it until it is tested by YOU. I know I am NOT taking any upgrades until I hear it here that it is safe to do it.

However, personally I have had none of these strange occurrences. 4.o is working great and is actually more user friendly as you don’t have multiple windows open.
Just like modern browsers you have tabbed viewing and your most current conversations and chats are at the top. Those with little activity you need to scroll down and find the conversation. This really stops embarrassing posts in inappropriate chat windows.
