What is Twitter?

Let us start by asking a question – What is Twitter? Twitter is a mini-blog used for communicating in short spurts of 140 characters with friends, family and business associates. You build your network by “following” other members, and have others follow you. There are two basic functions:

GIVING and RECEIVING with TWITTER

a) Give: Whenever you have done something that you would like to communicate to your “followers”, be it reading or writing an interesting new blog post, or taking your dog for a walk, you leave a short message on Twitter for all of your followers to see.

b) Receiving: You can follow Twitterers (people who post on Twitter), who seem most interesting to you. Then give again, do a Tweet (or update) post about what you got from reading or acting on the site they linked to in their Tweet. Start a conversation about your interest; ask and answer questions. The most important thing to remember is TO ACTUALLY TALK WITH OTHERS – start and continue discussions; share information but don’t just use it for self-promotion!

Followers & Following on Twitter

Let us define the expression “following” someone. If you are following someone, it means that you will receive all of their “Tweets” or updates. It is good to follow people who talk about your interests. If you are in business, and wanting to network because you want to build relationships by people getting to know, like and trust you, then you would choose people with similar outlooks and goals as you. It won’t help following someone whose other followers are all interested making friends to discuss knitting patterns if you are into building Websites as a business – unless off course, they may need a website for knitting patterns .

Seven Benefits Of Twitter

  5. Easy to post and read! Only 140 characters per post!
  6. Tweets can be posted on blogs and blog posts can be tweeted using plug-ins plus it integrates with other Social Web 2.0 sites like Facebook, Jabber, Squidoo, Skype, etc.
